MIDDLETON MUSIC FESTIVAL – WHY DOES IT HAPPEN.........?
Because it is the party of the year!!!
Although this is how many people see it (and why not?), the reason why we hold the event each year is to help with the financial running and maintenance of our wonderful playing field in the centre of Middleton Cheney.
Middleton Cheney Playing Field Association was formed way back in 1947, when a few villagers formed a committee with the intention of buying a playing field for the sports clubs of the village to play their matches. Although limited funds were available through the association (it was, after all, only two years after the end of war), people of the village were asked to give six pence a week toward the purchase of the field.Meanwhile, the committee worked constantly at holding fundraising events - just as we do today. Finally, five years later in 1952, the field was opened, purchased at the cost of £800!!!It consisted of two football pitches, a cricket square and two tennis courts. The committee also had intention of having a bowling green, but unfortunately, funds would not meet their request.
Over the years, the PFA went on to raise and obtain money in order to build a pavilion, and property for the purpose of a social club, which has been extended to meet the need of the sports clubs and residents of the village.Today, the playing field is in constant use, by either the football, cricket or tennis club and by the general public.Middleton Cheney Social Club is a successful independent business, with over two hundred members!!
The cost involved in running the association is not small.Facilities are in constant need of attention and development, as well as the general running costs. The association does not receive any automatic funding for its existence and so, just as in 1947, fundraising is essential. Over the last few decades, the PFA have always held the annual village fete which have raised substantial funds - however, back in the mid-nineties, a very different fundraiser took place and it seemed to be more successful than ever!!The first music festival saw a huge crowd attend for a different purpose. They seemed to like the idea of enjoying a few drinks with friends and family by revelling into the late evening. From then on, it was clear that this event was worth every effort in the organisation, as it is now noted as the ‘annual fundraiser’ for the PFA.The music festival has never lost a single penny in staging the event (even when the heavens opened in 2004!!), due to having the great support and generosity of the public.
Almost everybody involved in the production of Middleton Music Festival does so free of charge. We would like to take this opportunity to give thanks to all the crew and performers over the years for creating a fantastic event, and for giving your time or donating so generously.
In addition, we give thanks to the founders of Middleton Cheney Playing Field Association for their hard work and determination in the formation of our playing field, long may we continue your hard work and effort.
